The intent behind my small world project was to create
images that did not look like they came from a small scale set. Specifically I
sought out to recreate a miniature-farming scene, one that would allow me to
photograph all four main stages of the farming process. Disking, Planting,
Growing, and Harvesting. I wanted to photograph each of those four scenes
separately, but then also capture them all in one photograph. I wanted to try
to abstractly show the idea that each stage in the process is equally as important,
and without one of them it all falls apart. The fifth image in the series
brings home this idea. I started by taking an aerial shot of the scene
capturing all four stages within it. I then used Photoshop to assign a color
filter to each of the four stages. The color each stage received is not chosen
at random either. I chose a color that represents the season of the year that
that stage of farming takes place, for example harvest is in the fall so it has
an orange color filter. I also incorporated this same idea in the individual
scene shots by using a sky with a tint of the respective color. Going back to
the fifth image of the aerial shot. I decided to leave a small square of space
un effected by any color filters right in the center of the scene. This square
is there to represent that balance of all four stages in the farming process.
If any of the stages were removed from the shot the implied square would fall
apart.
